Maryam Hassan

Gender Advisor and Founding Member

Maryam is an expert with over 13 years of experience in program management, gender integration, conflict sensitivity, and security. She has worked with renowned international organizations, UN agencies, and key donors, leading impactful initiatives like the Women, Peace, and Security program and a community security project in Somalia, integrating Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles.
Currently, Maryam is a gender advisor and founding member of  Alternative Livelihood for Pastoralist (ALPC)-Northern Kenya,  a local organization focused on community development. She helped ALPC create a community engagement strategy that includes marginalized groups such as women, youth, people with disabilities, and those from traditionally excluded communities. Maryam is also a research fellow, assisting ALPC in reviewing their program and planning the next steps for 2024-2027.
Her expertise includes developing gender-sensitive conflict resolution strategies, community safety assessments, and inclusive program designs. She is skilled in designing Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) frameworks that prioritize GESI, ensuring the effectiveness of gender-focused programming. Maryam has empowered civil society organizations, particularly in Somalia, to implement GESI-responsive programs in challenging environments. Through her international collaborations with governments, security actors, and NGOs, she drives inclusive community security and rule of law initiatives, always ensuring that marginalized groups, especially women and girls, are prioritized in all stages of program development.
