Maisie Hughes
Maisie Hughes is the co-founder and creative director of the Urban Studio, where she collaborates with people on integrated projects to green their communities. She designs and builds green infrastructure and energy projects for low-income and affordable housing communities in partnership with other designers, nonprofit housing leaders, senior service agencies, solar businesses, and youth-serving institutions.
Previously, Maisie served as the vice president of urban forestry for American Forests.
She was responsible for planning, strategizing, and overseeing the implementation of American Forests’ 65+ million-dollar urban research, grantmaking, workforce, and consulting programs.
Maisie was a Landscape Architecture Foundation's 2018-2019 Leadership and Innovation fellow. Her project, “Belonging: Cultural Identity and Landscape Narrative,” explored how identity impacts an individual's experience of sublime urban landscapes.
She previously led the design and advocacy team for Casey Trees, served as the landscape architect and environmental designer for Morgan State University, and managed environmental programs for DC Parks and Recreation and the Greater Washington Urban League.
Maisie is a former ISA Certified Arborist and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the American Planning Association. She has an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University, a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Morgan State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Afro-American Studies from Howard University.
