Planet Women Program: 100 Women Pathway
Planet Women’s 100 Women Pathway is a leadership program that aims to amplify the voices of women and other underrepresented groups in the conservation and environmental sector. In the largest US-based conservation nonprofits, more than 80% of CEOs are White men and more than 60% of staff are White. Diverse leadership and gender equity will enable more effective, equitable solutions to the climate and biodiversity crisis. And it is crucial for the prevailing leadership style to become more inclusive, collaborative and attuned to the needs of local communities—another key aspect of the 100 Women Pathway’s programming.
100 Women Pathway is an eight-month program that brings together women who are already making a big impact in the environmental space and looking to take the next step in their career. Together, participants explore their unique leadership qualities, learn from their peers and professional coaches, and connect with executive leaders and recruiters.
In April 2024, we celebrated the conclusion of our third Pathway cohort. Eighteen women from public agencies, Tribal government and nonprofits gathered monthly to support each other as they explored opportunities for career growth. We are delighted to report that since the program began in 2022, 64 women have gone through the Pathway. And in that time, 11 alumni have leveled up to more senior positions, positioning them to more powerfully shape solutions to the environmental crisis!
During spring and summer, the team geared up for the launch of our fourth Pathway cohort, which is focused on women in the Southeastern U.S. The participants in cohort 4 represent ecologists, fundraisers, community organizers, educators, foresters, and marketers, who work at nature conservation nonprofits, international NGOs, research organizations, and community groups. They also reflect the diversity of the Southeast, with 61% of the women identifying as Black and 88% identifying as People of Color.
In October, the cohort came together for a three-day retreat in Atlanta, GA. At the gathering, participants explored their unique personal journeys, leadership styles, and career goals, learning from career coaches and creative facilitators, and bonding with each other in a supportive community. They also heard from a dynamite panel of women CEOs who shared their wisdom and experience. The panelists included:
Dr. Tiara Moore, CEO, Black in Marine Science (BIMS)
Monica Thorton, Executive Director, The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Chapter
Raina Turner-Greenlea, Founder & Executive Director, Black Sustainability
This year, we introduced another level of ongoing support for the Pathway alumni: Coaching Circles. These small group coaching sessions are facilitated by skilled coaches. They are designed to foster skill-building and peer support among alumni and meet the expressed needs of the group. Focus areas for the 2024 circles included:
An identity-based circle for Black women leaders
Navigating difficult conversations
Quitting Hard Things, and
Working effectively with boards of directors.
